Maybe by now the name is becoming familiar as the story hits the mainstream media. Doubtless there will be controversy and those - perhaps readers here - who will take the harsher view. I’m taking the route of the elegy.
Sheila Annett Lewis died today.
Who was she to write about?
No one, really. No fame, no blame,
Just a woman in need of a transplant,
But we can also accuse her
Of being a vaccine refuser.
Take the shot Ms. Lewis, a little prick, a tiny jab,
Then you get your organ, so take the stab.
But you were too stubborn,
And perhaps too dumb,
If you thought our health system
And those who took the Hippocratic Oath,
Wouldn’t suffer you to die.
You see, Ms. Lewis,
They took the Hypocritic Oath,
Which says they will do exactly that,
When you don’t comply.
Take the shot Ms. Lewis, a little prick a tiny jab,
Then you can have your organ, so take the stab.
All the courts agreed she had no case:
The Supreme Court refused to even hear,
Ordering her to pay costs
To Alberta Health and the transplant doctors.
Now that’s a Supreme example
From our court of renown,
Of how to hit low
And then double down.
Please tell us that you died with debt unpaid,
That you might have smiled
With your last, laboured breath.
But I say again, Miss Lewis,
You really didn’t have to die,
If you’d have just let them administer:
Indeed, so says our prime minister:
"It was their choice and nobody ever was going to force anyone
into doing something they don't want to do,”
You see, there’s nothing sinister,
“But there are consequences when you don't.”
Including death to those who won’t.
And so, Miss Lewis, can you not now see?
No one was ever going to force you
Into doing something you didn’t want to do.
You really didn’t have to die,
But “There are consequences,”
When people make bad choices.
You should have known, Miss Lewis:
We hear little now of freedom and caring,
Little at all of love and sharing
We’ve lost our souls, lost our way,
All that nonsense died with you today.
You could have had the shot,
Could have had the jab-
It’s just a tiny stab.
Could have had the organ,
Could have gone your way,
But there are consequences
When you won’t obey.
